Metadata Management
What is it?
Metadata is the descriptive information about data. It describes its attributes, context, and structure so that it is more easily managed, interpreted, and used.
Metadata can include:
- Where data originated from (lineage),
- The definitions of terminology (business glossary),
- How data should be conformed (data standards) and any business rules around this data.
Metadata management is the process of organising, controlling, and maintaining the metadata that describes an organisation’s data assets. It involves organising scattered metadata, from broad business definitions to detailed technical metadata in databases, using best practices and technologies for effective management.
